PATINA

A surface appearance of something grown beautiful, especially with age or use…

Patina was born with a mission in mind—to create a community and to be a resource for smart, thoughtful women of a certain age.

While there are many wonderful lifestyle blogs out there, I found that most were speaking to a much younger crowd, and I just couldn’t entirely relate.  I had questions about what was happening to my body- hot flashes, anyone?  I wanted articles about evolving style, because what looks good at 30 can be very different than what looks good at 50. And what about rediscovering and reinventing ourselves at a time when so much is changing in our lives? I was about to embark on a major life change myself, and had so many questions and thoughts. I just couldn’t find a site that hit all of the right notes. I knew I couldn’t be the only one who felt this way, so I decided to fill the void with Patina, a place to address the topics and issues that impact us as we move into mid-life and beyond.  From style and beauty to health and wellness and more, Patina will curate a forum that will focus on the modern mature woman who seeks to evolve mindfully and stay actively engaged in the world while looking and feeling her absolute best.

Fortunately, I think the cultural conversation surrounding aging is changing, and we are starting to talk more openly and more positively about the transitions we experience as we move into that next chapter.  For so long it seemed we were focused on the negative aspects of getting older- so much talk about becoming invisible and feeling diminished by a society that puts much stock in youth and beauty.  But this is not your mother’s middle age, and the definition of beauty is expanding and becoming much more holistic.  More and more attention is being paid to the confidence and freedom that comes with life experience and the letting go of the need for perfectionism.  And with that, more women are seeing this time not as an end, but as a beginning; an opportunity to rediscover themselves and open up to new possibilities.  I am grateful to know such women and to be inspired by them every day.

I hope that Patina will be a roadmap of sorts to help navigate these new waters and empower women to truly see the beauty in the layers…
