If you’re following along here, you know that our #tuesdaytopic is inspiring women, past and present, who reinvented, reimagined or otherwise achieved great things in the second half! Today’s inspiration is the beautiful and talented Vera Wang.

Vera Wang is an icon in the design world, and her wedding dresses are synonymous with modern sophistication. So I was surprised to learn that she didn’t design her first one until she was 40-years old! She got engaged at 39, a bit older than most brides-to-be, and could not find a dress that suited her aesthetic. So she worked with a designer to create one, and with encouragement and financial backing from her father, started her eponymous company the following year. She had two incredible careers to that point- first as a fashion editor at Vogue, and then as a design director at Ralph Lauren. She had also been a competitive figure skater as a teen, nearly making the Olympic team. But in her quest to find her own wedding dress, she saw an opportunity in the bridal market, and changed it forever!

In an interview with the Harvard Business Review in 2019, she said “…My DNA was to find something I felt passionate about, to make a difference, and to work…” And as a result of that hard work, she has built a lifestyle brand that reaches beyond bridal, encompassing ready-to-wear, publishing, fragrance, beauty, accessories and home.

Vera is another awesome example of the fact that it’s never too late to start something new… 🤍
