Patina on Instagram…
It’s been a year and a half since I launched Patina, and through fits and starts it seems like we are finally starting to gain some traction. One very pleasant surprise through this journey has been the very interesting midlife community I’ve met (and continue to meet) via Instagram. It’s been wonderful to connect with women and share stories and experiences as we navigate midlife. Below is an IG post that I wanted to memorialize on the blog as well, as it comes from my heart and explains my motivations for starting this blog as well as my thoughts about how it’s evolved. I hope you enjoy reading, and I hope to continue to connect with wonderful women like you. Thank you so much for being here… xx
It’s a new week, and there are some beautiful new faces around here, so I thought I’d take a moment tell you a bit about myself and what I’m doing here. ’m Dina, a former attorney, business owner and a work in progress! I’m also a wife and a step-mom to two amazing adult sons. This space is an extension of my blog, Patina, a passion project and the embodiment of my midlife reinvention. I thought a lot about what to call it along the way, and chose the name because I wanted to evoke a feeling of richness and texture; of the beautiful layers acquired with exposure and the passage of time. That’s how I like to think about aging, and that’s the conversation I want to keep having so we can continue to shift perceptions and outdated notions.
As I approached my 50’s, I couldn’t find much out there that addressed the issues and transitions of midlife (empty nests, peri/menopause, shifting priorities, evolving style, careers, midlife wellness, etc), so I decided to fill what I saw as a void. And by the way, there are ALOT of us out here— more than 50 million women in the US are over the age of 51. Yet somehow we are still an underrepresented demographic across the board.
My goal is to inform, inspire and encourage women to embrace midlife; to move into the next chapter with confidence and an open mind and heart, and to see themselves as valuable and relevant with much to contribute. And as it evolves, I am also thinking about younger women and hoping it speaks to them in a way that conveys that they need not fear aging.
I also want to show by example that it’s never too late to shift gears and pursue your dreams; to reimagine and to keep exploring and becoming; to harness the experience, confidence and wisdom gained over time and use it to take chances, find new meaning, new purpose, and new paths.
Oh, and I love fashion and styling, so there will always be a healthy dose of that here as well!
I’m so grateful and excited that you are along for this journey, and I look forward continuing to learn from all of you amazing women as well!
